Escaramuza Charra (skirmish team) is an all female equestrian team part of traditional Mexican rodeo. The girls ride side saddled in synchronized choreographed maneuvers to music.
Their attire is styled after the women who helped fight in the Mexican revolution by creating an advantage by serving as a distraction. Using choreographed maneuvers, they would ride in circles and cross paths before abruptly parting, allowing the cavalry to charge through and fight.
The sport is an expensive one, creating a barrier for entry at times, especially for Mexican American teams. The girls are judged strictly, from their costumes (their crinolines must be starched perfectly) to their saddles (which need to be made of leather, there is an emphasis on natural materials in Mexican Rodeo sports), and of course their routine.
The team is fundraising to compete in the international competition in Mexico next year. Please consider a donation to help keep this incredible sport alive so more girls will be able to experience this special part of their heritage.
